What Is The Purpose Of Goal Setting And How To Get It Done

When I was thinking about the YEAR AHEAD MASTERCLASS, it was important for me to spend time thinking about the topics that would be impactful for the people that would be attending. I recognized that people’s tanks were running low and they needed some way out. I had to think about the assets in my own resource bank that had helped me thrive in 2020. I knew immediately that GOAL SETTING was at the top of the list.

So, lets chat a little about goal setting, starting with the definition:

Goal setting involves the development of an action plan designed to motivate and guide a person or group toward a goal. Goal setting can be guided by goal-setting criteria (or rules) such as SMART criteria. Goal setting is a major component of personal-development and management literature.

Ok, I know that sounds like a lot so let me just break it down a bit. You remember that anecdote about how knowing where you want to go, will help you decide which road to take. This is the concept of goal setting. When you know what you want to achieve you will need to constantly make decisions that get you there.

I have personally found that goal setting helps me stay grounded and clear on the mission at hand, which allows me to stay focused and centre my effort around getting to that destination.

 So, what happens if

 1.     You do not know where you want to go?

2.     When you feel like there is just a lot to consider?

3.     When the word GOALS just stir up anxiety.

This is where we get practical.

A couple of years ago I came across a goal setting technique that looked at 12 life categories as the pillars of goal setting.

Now, I always highlight the importance of picking primary areas to focus on and then making those goals key primary areas S.M.A.R.T.

Example

Wake up early versus Wake up at 5am from Monday to Friday for the first three months of the year.

Once you have identified the areas you want to focus on and the goals you want to attain, I always encourage people to bring these goals to life through vision boarding which we will explore in the next article.

Let me know if you have nay questions on goal setting that you would like us to unpack in other articles.
