Self-Mastery & Complete Wellbeing: Why Women Must Know Their Numbers
True self-mastery begins with self-awareness—especially when it comes to our health. In a recent episode of The Agenda Women Podcast, in partnership with Momentum Multiply, we explored the powerful connection between self-mastery and complete wellbeing.
I was joined by two phenomenal women:
Maria Pouroullis Carpenter, Head of Momentum Multiply, who is driving innovation in incentivised wellness programmes.
Mbali Mapholi, a dietitian and wellness advocate reshaping the way we think about nutrition and culture.
Together, we unpacked why knowing your numbers—both in nutrition and in wellness data—can be a life-changing tool for women.
Maria reminded us that one of the biggest barriers to women prioritising their health is simply not knowing where they stand. “Awareness is the first step to empowerment,” she shared. Multiply’s tools and rewards programme make it easier for women to access personalised insights about their health status and risks—and to take practical steps forward.
Mbali brought a fresh perspective: nutrition should be practical, culturally relevant, and inclusive. Food is not just about nutrients, but also about culture and connection. By understanding nutritional needs—from blood sugar levels to how our daily meals impact mental clarity—women can take control of both body and mind.
One of the most fascinating insights came from the synergy between Multiply’s approach and Mbali’s work. External incentives, like wellness rewards, can help spark the journey—but it’s the small, consistent habits that keep women moving forward. Maria explained how Multiply collaborates with communities to amplify the ripple effect, making health not just a personal pursuit but a collective one.
The statistics paint a stark picture: South Africa has one of the highest obesity rates in the world, with women disproportionately affected. Non-communicable diseases like diabetes, hypertension, and heart disease are also on the rise among women. With more than 42% of households headed by women, the stakes are not just personal—they are generational.
Health is not only about prevention; it’s also about celebrating progress. Reward yourself for the small wins—whether it’s a better night’s sleep, a healthier meal, or a mental health break. Every step is a form of self-mastery
This conversation reminded me that mastering our health is one of the greatest forms of mastering our lives. When women know their numbers, they are not just improving their own wellbeing—they are rewriting the future for themselves, their families, and their communities.
