#AWPOWERFIFTY: Lisa Bhembe

What motivated you to become an entrepreneur OR take your career in the direction you did? Is having your own business OR this role you are in something you always wanted?

My entrepreneurial journey commenced at a young age, fueled by an unwavering quest for independence and self-reliance. Recognizing the significance of establishing credibility as a businesswoman, I embarked on a path aimed at proving my capabilities and expertise in the professional arena.

Driven by a relentless pursuit of growth and impact, I made a strategic transition into the energy industry, drawing upon the invaluable guidance and wisdom imparted by my mother, a seasoned veteran in the realm of petroleum. Armed with a combination of inherited knowledge and a fervent dedication to problem-solving, I confronted obstacles head-on, navigating challenges with resilience and determination.

Through perseverance and a commitment to excellence, I not only overcame hurdles but also achieved significant success in the energy sector. Each triumph served as a testament to my innate entrepreneurial spirit and unwavering resolve to carve out a meaningful legacy in the business world.

Transitioning from the energy industry to the health and wellness sector marked a pivotal shift in my career trajectory. The decision was prompted by a culmination of factors, including the intense stress inherent in the energy field, compounded by unhealthy dietary habits and chronic sleep deprivation resulting from demanding work schedules. The onset of the COVID-19 pandemic underscored the paramount importance of prioritizing health, serving as a poignant reminder of the fragility of life.

Moreover, a deeply personal experience further solidified the significance of prioritizing health and well-being. It became unequivocally clear that without optimal health, all other facets of life, including career success and financial prosperity, pale in comparison.

Thus, my transition into the health and wellness industry signifies a conscientious choice to embrace a lifestyle centered around holistic well-being. It reflects a commitment to fostering physical, mental, and emotional vitality, recognizing that true fulfillment emanates from nurturing oneself from the inside out. This journey embodies a pursuit of balance, resilience, and a steadfast dedication to cultivating a life of meaning and vitality.

It seems as though my journey has led me to a place where my soul truly feels at home. I've discovered an unparalleled sense of fulfillment and vitality in prioritizing my own well-being. This newfound commitment to self-care has ignited within me a profound desire to extend this gift to others, guiding them on their own paths toward optimal health and wellness.

For me, this endeavor transcends mere business pursuits; it's a calling to serve and uplift humanity. At The Jannis Lifestyle, our mission is rooted in the profound belief that everyone deserves the opportunity to thrive. We are dedicated to empowering individuals to embrace healthier lifestyles, offering not just products or services, but a transformative journey toward holistic well-being.

I find immense joy and purpose in knowing that our efforts are contributing to a healthier, more inspired society. It's a privilege to be able to make a meaningful impact in the lives of others, and I am deeply grateful for the opportunity to do so through The Jannis Lifestyle.

Which woman has positively impacted you in your career/business? And what is the one lesson she taught you?

Andrea Iyamah, a trailblazing Nigerian fashion designer, stands as a beacon of inspiration in my career journey. Her innovative approach to African fashion has not only revolutionized the industry but also imparted invaluable lessons on the importance of authenticity and originality.

I draw immense insight from Andrea's unwavering commitment to staying true to her roots while pushing the boundaries of creativity. Her resolute belief in the power of authenticity serves as a guiding principle in my own endeavors, reminding me that genuine expression is paramount in achieving success.

In my current business ventures, particularly in the realm of nutrition, Andrea's ethos resonates deeply. Just as she has redefined perceptions of African fashion, I recognize the significance of challenging conventional norms, particularly when it comes to dietary choices. Andrea's example inspires me to embrace the richness and diversity of cultural culinary traditions, understanding that well-researched doesn't always equate to superior health benefits. In essence, Andrea Iyamah's influence transcends the realms of fashion, serving as a constant reminder that authenticity and originality are indeed the cornerstones of lasting impact and success.

How do you define success?

To me, success is more than just personal fulfillment; it's about finding inner peace each night and eagerly anticipating the dawn of a new day. It's the ability to strike a harmonious balance in life, where time for family is prioritized and opportunities are attracted rather than chased.

But true success goes beyond individual achievement—it involves contributing to the well-being of others. That's why I'm passionate about helping people achieve this balance in their own lives. I believe in uplifting others on their journey toward holistic fulfilment.

Ultimately, success is about nurturing inner peace, fostering happy and healthy relationships, and making a positive impact in the lives of those around us. It's a journey of growth, both personally and collectively, towards a more balanced and fulfilling existence.

What do you believe is the most impactful and immediate action your industry can take to Accelerate Gender Equality Through Economic Empowerment. (this is the theme for INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY in 2024)

The most impactful and immediate action our industry can take to accelerate gender equality through economic empowerment is to prioritize the training and empowerment of women as health coaches and nutritionists. In Africa, where the prevalence of diseases linked to poor nutrition is rising due to the influx of Western products, empowering women with the knowledge and skills to promote healthy eating habits is crucial.

Women often play a central role in providing nourishment for their families, making them key influencers in shaping dietary choices and overall well-being. By equipping women with comprehensive training in nutrition and health coaching, we not only enhance their economic opportunities but also leverage their innate capacity for care and nurturing to positively impact communities.

Moreover, by elevating the role of women as leaders and educators in the health and wellness sector, we challenge traditional gender norms and foster a more inclusive and equitable society. This approach not only addresses immediate health challenges but also contributes to long-term societal transformation, leading to improved health outcomes and greater gender equality.
