AWPOWERFIFTY: Lisa Madibe

What motivated you to become an entrepreneur OR take your career in the direction you did? Is having your own business OR this role you are in something you always wanted?

Embarking on my wig business has always been a cherished dream of mine. I have a deep passion for wigs and extensions, but I faced uncertainties about starting and managing a business due to a lack of entrepreneurial role models or guidance. However, upon discovering the world of influencing, I found my niche in hair-related content creation, shaping my brand around captivating hair-focused content. Embracing the title "Lisa with the Good Hair" given by my community, I remained purposeful in my content creation and collaborated with both local and international hair brands to establish a trustworthy brand, all while planning for the launch of HAIRLO. Finally, after ten years, I am thrilled to officially share the realization of my dream.

Which woman has positively impacted you in your career/business? And what is the one lesson she taught you?

I have been fortunate to be in the company of successful businesswomen. Among them, there are a few remarkable women I admire, such as Victoria Shuko, known for her wig business, who mentored me and shared valuable insights about the wig and extensions industry. I've also had enriching conversations with Nomdeni Mdakhi, observing her dedication and work ethic. Additionally, I draw inspiration from my colleagues, including Sinovuyo Mondliwa, Mbali Sebapu, and Mpoomy Ledwaba, who have transformed their passions into respected and prosperous businesses.

How do you define success?

Achieving success means persistently pursuing your dreams, not giving up by showing up every day and actively working towards making them a reality. Success to me means being at peace and happy too.

One insight for anyone interested in the industry you are working in?

The wig and extension business caters to a wide audience, making it a continually expanding industry with many participants. To stand out, conduct thorough research, grasp your market, provide what customers desire, and offer high-quality hair products. Having a deep understanding of your products and being knowledgeable about them will build trust with your customers.

What is your one key guiding principle in your work life?

Give your all. Approach your work as if it's your final paycheck. Always strive to make a lasting impression by putting in 100% effort.

What do you believe is the most impactful and immediate action your industry can take to Accelerate Gender Equality Through Economic Empowerment. (this is the theme for INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY in 2024)

I think establishing empowerment and business initiatives can contribute significantly to economic growth. Reaching out to unemployed and disadvantaged women and men, imparting them with sustainable wig-making and hairdressing, styling skills, and empowering them to earn an income can boost both gender equality and the economy.

Self-care rituals that keep you grounded

I enjoy spending time alone; it helps me stay centred and balanced. Typically, I go to the gym, listen to new music, or relax by sleeping, visiting the spa, praying, and worshiping.
